presentations - central hub

Here's what I have so far - please add to this in comments. I've added a few side topics to some of the items and will follow up individually with each group on Wednesday, so have your topics and groupings ready by then.

1. Techno-utopianism / luddism (Oskar + ...)

2. Oversaturation of advertising – PowerShift – alternative media – PR industry, lobby groups (Charisse, Kristen, Antonietta)

3. Documenting the reality of marginalized people through various media – appropriation of voice vs. empowerment (Melissa + ...)

more topics?

I have two interests:

1. cyberfeminist stuff

2. how photography and other art forms are used to give voice and document the reality of marginalized people (non-Western) -> this would fall into the "choose a particular social problem" option, if marginalization counts as a social problem?

I'm a bit more interested in the second but I'll gladly do either depending on which (if any!) is more popular with others...

My idea for the presentation is to focus on the issue of oversaturation of advertising in our world today. Ads that we see everyday break moral, ethical and cultural boundaries and it is somehow OK. I would like to focus on the groundbreaking Adbusters organization called 'PowerShift' which is an advertising agency that only work with non-profit companies to deliver the messages the world needs to hear. I think that this is a step in the right direction towards an un-biased and more public media reality.

If anyone is interested in working with me on this idea I would love to hear from you. And let's START!

hey kristen!
i like where you are going with this idea about the over saturation within the society of advertisements... we are being bombarded with thousands of images everyday and it somehow ends up being encrypted in our mind of pure mindless things yet we find ourselves giving into it.... and i actually was amazed that many agencies don't do the pro-bono stuff because it doesn't make money... and how the world is somehow dictated by the consumption of the society.... so its cool to hear that an agency just only does the pro-bono ads... we need more of that in the world.... so i would love to work with you with this topic
